The Morning Paper

The morning paper told
of gains made by our side,
and the number of killed and wounded
(but these were men that died,

a nightmare round of facts),
but statistics do not bleed
so we find comfort in adding
the score to the news we read.

The morning stands in my window,
a sparrow chirps in the eaves,
I think of the wonder a child has
for the dance of sun on leaves.
